Surat al-Muminun – The Believers

Surat al-Muminun is the first chapter in Juz 18 and its main topic focuses on faith in Allah as well as resurrection. Both are part of the meaning of life. This is why the true believer is both contemplative and socially active, unlike that “armchair” kind. The true believer is faithfully generous, responsible, and humble. Avoids vain activities and is chaste. Honors contracts and craves for touches of Divinity. These traits reveal genuine faith, a magnanimous soul, and a strong conscience. This is the characterization of a truthful and sacrificial soul. The reward is Paradise.

Thereafter is a list of evidence in the realm of Allah’s creative ability. Seven weeks of fetal development in the mother’s womb is like an ultrasound scan. Then a history of disobedience and humanity’s rejection of many prophets follows. The characteristics of disbelievers are that they tend to think Prophets are only human and do not believe in life after death. They despise the prophets, deceive themselves with false hopes, and even hate truth. They are obstinate and do as they please.

Disbelievers Plead for Punishment

They refuse to accept their criticism of the prophets as having no foundation, a product of arrogance and confusion. They doggedly follow their whims. The blessed Messenger ﷺ is informed through the life stories of some prophets that such behavior by Makkans was characteristic of people from time immemorial. 23-80 It singles out the harmony of the universal message propagated by prophets.

The disbelievers often pleaded for the punishment to fall swiftly, but that was denied. Allah gives them the time to repent. Those who insisted on demands for miracles were also denied and reminded to use their Allah-given faculties of hearing, seeing, and feeling.

Three questions are asked: “Who is the master of the earth?”; “And who holds dominion over all seven heavens?”. Who oversees everything under his power in other words? They reply with “Allah”, thus they’re inquired as to why not accept the resurrection.

Surat Al-Nur – The Light

So Surat Al-Nur in Juz 18 is disclosed from Madinah during 5 AH. Social manners are the central theme. This is to establish firm ground upon which men and women are to build their relationships based on modesty and respect. There is a penalty for adultery and slander of innocent people. Adultery is severely punished. 

Men and women mixing is prohibited. The principle of modesty is called Hijab, which implies not only the dress code for men and women but also their behavior. Privacy inside and outside the home is a sacred thing for each individual. These rules are designed to create a puristic and respectful environment that is devoid. Failure to control may lead to disorder in family life and chaos in the larger society. 

 It ends the story by telling that she was innocent and gives six social rules: Do not spread rumors. Punish those who distribute obscenity. Forgive Asking permission while entering houses, girls should wear a Hijab in Public Life to encourage single people to marry.

Allah and the Quran’s Guidance

The parable of light takes us to Allah’s guidance. In this parable the niche is man’s heart; the lamp represents Quranic guidance, human intellect signifies glass while emotional energy defines olive oil. The example illustrates that everybody can accept what is true. There is a basic desire to find the truth. Just like petrol a spark can ignite it into flames. 

So whenever the Divine guidance (the light) is given to people, one is spiritually moved or persuaded into accepting it. As we see wonderful things happening around us in the physical world — like rain, ripples, and earthquakes – our hearts are full of wonderment that leads to Him which therefore makes us wish for guidance.

There is a second category of unbeliever, worldly-minded individuals with their minds submerged in lust and ambition to gain wealth and status. He is immersed in hedonistic pleasures, and lives surrounded by black omission of self-indulgence. He can’t receive the light. The example describes the four layers of darkness: night’s darkness, the sea depths, and surges of tides. 40“And Allah says, ‘All who I place into darkness shall have no light for the disbelievers.

Surat al Furqan The Criterion between Right and Wrong

Para 18 goes on with Surat al-Furqan. It begins by asserting the power and majesty of the elevated Lord, the governing ruler of this entire world. Then gives the justifications for the Oneness of God Tawhid, communication of His Message Risala, and life after death Akhira. These beliefs were most contradictory to the pagan religion.

In Makkah, the Messenger ﷺ was continuously attacked. The Makkans wondered why the Quran was revealed bit by bit, not all at once. They accused the Messenger ﷺ of being a liar and said that he only recounted tales about those who came before them. Similarly, they attacked him as a person, how could Allah’s messenger be mortal?
