Summary of Para 16

Musa and Khidr’s Story Continues

Musa meekly asks if he may follow Khidrin who grudgingly says yes but warns – do not question the questions. Three incidents occur. Khidr purposely destroys a fishing boat, strikes down a young man, and repairs the fence of an old house. Musa is disturbed by these actions and questions each of them. But only at the end does Khidr explain:

“The boat was owned by the poor fisherpeople, I damaged it because the king wanted to seize all seaworthy boats forcibly. The parents of that boy were worshipers but we feared they would be distressed watching him being a naughty kid.” The house belonged to orphan children in the town and buried treasure beneath its wall. They are the sons of a righteous man whose Lord wanted them to grow up and dig out their treasure. this was your Lord’s kindness.

The fifth lies around Zulqarnayn the king, and a just ruler. Wherever he came, he did something good. The most interesting one is his effort to build a wall between the tribe that was being teased and harassed by the Gog Magog.

The Mother of Prophet Isa Maryam

Para 16 picks up with this early Makkan surat that was sent down before the first wave of migration to Ethiopia, in the fifth year of Muhammad and his followers. It starts with the prayer of Zakariyya who asked for his replacement. He was old and concerned about his heirs, but never fathered a child.

The story of miraculous conception and the birth of Isa indicates both Power and Majesty, beyond even causality due to Allah. “I am a servant of Allah; He has given me the Book and made me a prophet and blessed wherever I go” are the first words that Isa says (31).

The Quran denies the concept of the Trinity. It is completely unacceptable to Allah: ?”What a monstrous thing you have said! Even the skies would crack, the Earth would rip apart and mountains would shatter” (89-91). Wrath of the Divine is a strong critique against idolatry.

A highly charged conversation then follows between a nephew and an uncle: Ibrahim very gently urges and persuades his uncle, Azar to leave idolatry. He makes use of the courtesy and logic that is so convincing even a heart as hard as stone cannot resist it.

Four Stories

There are four stories: Zakariyya and Yahya; Maryam and Isa; Ibrahim, Azar;; and Musa, Harun. They represent a father and son, mother and child – uncle & nephew relationships as well as two brotherly connections.

A glowing tribute is paid to Prophets Musa, Ismail, Idris, Yaqub, and Nuh: 51 “Allah blessed these great men, such as the prophets descending from Adam’s offspring, coming down with Nuh and belonging to IbrahimlYaqub – descendants. All has selected them during We sent those verses which touch their hearts This resulted in crying tears out of sadness while performing prostration when uttering them” (30

The Quran denounces the generations that were offsprings of prophets, before them are “generations who went against prayer and practiced their whims We shall reap for these what they earned from; wickedness” (59). Salah is a tangible reflection of an individual’s relationship with Allah, the Lord. Ignoring it shows a lack of commitment in the relationship.

Surah Ends with Good News

The Surah ends with good news for the believers: “Allah, the Kind Lord will fill people’s hearts with love for those who believe and do righteous deeds” (96). This could be that the Kind Lord loves them greatly. The Surah goes further

“We made the Quran easy for you in your language so that good news is given to the pious and warns its opponents. How many generations have We killed before them? Does anybody of them live or hear the least even their breath? (97-8)

Surat Taha continues in Juz 16. 11 Y䀙sum He is appointed a messenger and miracles are given to him. Finally, the surah goes back to his early years when he was saved from Pharaoh’s deadly plot as an infant. “I wrapped you up in My Divine Love, so that you may grow up under my watchful gaze” 39.Musa hurries to the court of Pharaoh.

Despite this humiliating defeat and having witnessed nine miracles, Pharaoh still rejects Musa عليه السلام. Finally, Musa عليه السلام guided the Israelites out of Egypt. he chased them and drowned in the Nile. The Israelites were also blessed with the heavenly gifts of quail and Manna once they reached the Sinai Peninsula.

When Musa left them for a few minutes to pray on Mount Sinai, the Israelites under Samiri the Goldsmith’s influence made a gold calf and worshipped it. During his homecoming, Musa was angry at Harun for failing to halt them. Musa cursed the blasphemy of Samiri.
